Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Jawad Zarif wrote on Twitter yesterday that “the European countries that signed the European deal with Iran and the US should convince US President Donald Trump not to withdraw from it”.

Zarif’s comments come ahead of a deadline for Trump to renew the deal which falls on 12 May. The US President has said that he will tear it up unless European allies fix its “terrible flaws”.

The Iranian government has urged European leaders to support the agreement and convince Trump not to scrap it. International leaders have called on Trump to reconsider:

“[French] President Macron is correct in saying there’s no ‘Plan B’ on JCPOA [the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action]. It’s either all or nothing. European leaders should encourage President Trump not just to stay in the nuclear deal, but more importantly to begin implementing his part of the bargain in good faith.”
