In a ceremony on Tuesday, 21st September, Gaza’s Ministry of Social Affairs distributed electric wheelchairs to 130 wounded and disabled individuals in the Gaza Strip as part of a new project. These wheelchairs were brought to the sector aboard the ‘Freedom Flotilla’ which attempted to break the naval blockade of the sector in May this year. The Flotilla was attacked by the Israeli Navy in international waters and nine peace activists were shot dead.

During the ceremony chaired by the Minister of Social Affairs in Gaza, Ahmad Kurd, he said: “The project falls within the Ministry’s framework to provide various segments of the Palestinian people with relief from problems caused by the Israeli embargo.” Supporting institutions include the Turkish Charity Foundation (IHH) and the Charitable Society in Kuwait.

Mr Kurd noted that the distributed wheelchairs would contribute to the rehabilitation of the disabled into the community as well as allow for the alleviation of the difficult conditions they live under which could lead to psychological disabilities.

Mr Kurd also called on the international community to work toward breaking the siege on Gaza and to allow its inhabitants free movement but also to enable the disabled and wounded Gazans to cross the borders at Rafah in order receive medical treatment abroad.
