Ex-Mossad chief rules out peace talks

Former Mossad chief Efraim Halevy has ruled out the possibility of the resumption of peace talks between the Israelis and Palestinians. Addressing a Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defence Committee on 16th May, Mr Halevy said that such negotiations are, in the current situation, “impossible”.

According to the ex-spymaster, “the International Quartet’s ability to affect peace talks is diminishing.” This, he claims, makes space to manoeuvre much smaller.

“The existing situation is a non-starter… what happened in the past two years is that what we wanted can’t come to fruition; we can’t reach a permanent peace deal because the person who would sign the deal is not the same person who would need to carry it out,” he added.
