Lawsuit filed against Netanyahu and Barack in Jordanian court

February 27, 2014 at 4:31 am

A lawsuit against Israel’s Prime Minister and Minister of Defence has been filed in Jordan’s State Security Court. Amman’s Public Prosecutor, Hassan Alabdillat, transferred the lawsuit against Benjamin Netanyahu and Ehud Barack to the court which deals with terrorist offences, citing the kidnapping of Jordanian citizens during Israel’s hijacking of the Gaza Freedom Flotilla last week.

According to the Sabil newspaper on 9 June, the lawyer filing the case claims that the kidnapping and thus the stopping of aid to Gaza is regarded as a terrorist offence in Jordan. Mohamed Abu Ghanima said that it is right to prosecute everyone who planned and carried out the attack as foreigners under Article 9 of the Jordanian Penal Code.

Mr. Abu Ghanima, who is waiting to hear if the court is going to accept the case, has asked the Jordanian government to amend the law to allow for the prosecution of people committing offences against Jordanian nationals, even outside Jordanian territory.

The case against Messrs Netanyahu and Barack accuses them of being responsible for the arrest of participants in the international humanitarian aid convoy and the confiscation of their documents, passports and personal belongings. Mr. Abu Ghanima’s brother, who is the head of the Agricultural Syndicate, was one of those who took part in the Freedom Flotilla.
