Court case calling for the criminalisation of Rabaa sign adjourned

April 12, 2014 at 3:22 pm

An Egyptian court has decided to postpone until 3 June a case demanding the interim government to issue a decree prohibiting the use of the Rabaa sign.

The sign is used to show solidarity with the anti-coup protesters who were killed, wounded and arrested when Egyptian security forces violently dispersed a peaceful protest in support of ousted President Mohamed Morsi in Rabaa Square on 14 August of last year.

A lawyer called Tariq Mahmoud had filed a suit demanding the criminalisation the Rabaa sign, which is mainly used by Muslim Brotherhood members and supporters, under the pretext that it threatens the country’s national security.

The case’s defendants are the military-appointed interim President Adly Mansour, Prime Minister Ibrahim Mahlab, and the ministers of interior and justice.
