Egypt: 11 Morsi supporters died in custody since July 3 due to medical negligence and torture

Families of 11 supporters of the ousted president Mohamed Morsi said their relatives died in custody due to absence of medical care in prisons.

According to Anadolu news agency, at least 11 Morsi supporters lost their lives in the period between July 3 2013 and May 2 2014 due to both torture and medical neglect by prison guards.


Families of the victims blamed security agencies for their death, saying they were deliberately denied access to medical care.

The Interior Ministry, however, insists that it abides by human rights standards inside prisons.

Below is a list of cases, as documented by Anadolu:

September 27, 2013: Safwat Khalil (57 years)
Khalil was a leading member of the Muslim Brotherhood in Dakahliya governorate. He died in his prison cell at the Mansoura General Prison. He was a cancer patient. His family accused authorities of denying him proper medical treatment, which led to his death. He was arrested while taking part in a protest last August 24 in Mansoura.

September 30, 2013: Abdelwahab Mohamed Abdelwahad (46 years)
Abdelwahab was a member of the Muslim Brotherhood in Mina governorate. He died in Minya Military Prison affected by his diabetes and cancer. His family accused police of causing his death by denying him medical care. He was arrested during an anti-coup protest in his city.

October 14, 2013: Abdelrahman Mostafa
Mostafa was a leading member of the Muslim Brotherhood in Cairo. He died immediately after being transferred from Tora Prison in which he had been jailed, to the Qasr Al-Aini hospital, as he suffered a sharp decline in circulation. Mostafa had been diagnosed with pancreas cancer, and was a co-defendant with Morsi in the “espionage” and “prison break” cases.

October 30, 2013: Salah Youssef Abulleel (30 years)
Abulleel died of torture at the Minya Militay Prison, according to the Pharmacists Syndicate to which he was affiliated.
He was arrested from his pharmacy in September, 2013. He was a member of the Muslim Brotherhood in Minya governorate.

January 6, 2014: Sami Mahmoud Aburukba (60 years)
A leading member of the Muslim Brotherhood in Alexandria, Aburukba died in Tora Prison due to lack of access to medical treatment as he suffered from diabetes and high blood pressure. His family accused police of denying him access to medicine. Aburukba was arrested during the dispersal of the Rabaa sit-in last August 14.

February 5, 2014: Mohamed Alghuzlani (60 years)
Alghuzlani suffered from diabetes, blood pressure and hepatitis c. He died after police refused to allow him access to medicine, his family said. He was arrested on September 19, 2013 during police storming of the Kerdasa neighbourhood in Giza governorate.

March 4, 2014: Mahmoud Abdelhady (59 years)
Abdelhady, a leading figure of the Muslim Brotherhood in Ismailia governorate, died at the Mostakbal Prison.
Security officials claimed at that time that he died a natural death. It remains unclear how he died. He was arrested during a pro-Morsi protest in Ismailia.

March 18, 2014: Rida Abdelfattah Emara (52 years)
Emara died in Damanhour Prison in Beheira govrnorate. Security officials claimed he died of a drop in blood circulation as he was diagnosed with hepatic failure. He was arrested from a pro-Morsi protest.

April 5, 2014: Fathy Ramadan (45 years)
Ramadan died in Minya Prison. Security officials said he died of a heart attack. He was arrested from a pro-Morsi protest in Minya.

April 17, 2014: Sayed Ali Geneidi (63 years)
Geneidi died of angina in a Fayoum governorate prison called Demou. He was arrested in the aftermath of the Rabaa dispersal.

May 2, 2014: Gomaa Ali Hmeida (64 years)

Hmeida died in the Borg Al-Arab Prison in Alexandria. His family said his death was due to absence of medical care as prison guards denied him access to medication. He suffered from diabetes, high blood pressure and hepatitis c. He was arrested on December 28.
