Egypt: Jailed Aljazeera journalist moved to undisclosed location following calls for his release

The Tora Prison authorities transported the detained Aljazeera reporter Abdullah ElShamy from his cell to an undisclosed location, Aljazeera channel reported Monday.

The move came after Elshamy’s attorneys lodged a complaint to the Public Prosecutor demanding his immediate release and transferring him to a hospital within a maximum of 48 hours, due to the deterioration of his health following more than 112 days of hunger strike.

Blood tests conducted on May 8 showed that Elshamy was suffering from acute anaemia, decreasing red blood cells and kidney dysfunction.

Doctors told Aljazeera that Elshamy’s condition is life-threatening, and that he would die within few days.

Meanwhile, pro-coup anchor Amr Adeeb called for the release of Aljazeera correspondents and upholding freedom of speech: “I am against the arrest of any journalist because of his work. This issue causes us a foreign policy crisis. Whenever Egyptian officials meet with foreign counterparts, they are asked about this issue.”
