An Egyptian court acquitted on Wednesday the former Supreme Guide of the Muslim Brotherhood Mohammed Mahdi Akef, of the charge of insulting the judiciary, according to judicial sources.
Akef is the second prominent leader in the group to be cleared of accusations since the coup, after Essam el-Erian, the deputy head of the Freedom and Justice Party, was discharged on 16 March by the Misdemeanor Court along with 14 other Brotherhood leaders who had been charged of inciting violence and sabotage of facilities in Ismailia. “
The Judicial sources said that Cairo’s Criminal Court, headed by Judge Mustafa Salama and held at the Institute of Trustees of the Police has decided to acquit Akef, but the former Supreme Guide will continue to be detained pending other charges, most notably the case of commonly known as the Guidance Bureau event in which Akef is accused of inciting violence.
