Egyptian coup leader Abdul-Fattah Al-Sisi said on Tuesday, after being officially announced as Egypt’s new president, that he is working with the Egyptian people to achieve “freedom, human dignity and social justice,” Al-Sharq news portal reported.

In a televised speech he delivered in wake of the announcement of his victory in the presidential elections, where there were no real competitors and a spectacularly low turnout, he thanked the Egyptian people for what he called the “democratic model” they achieved.

The news portal quoted Al-Sisi as saying that: “The future is a white sheet, we have a choice to fill in this sheet with whatever we want: life, freedom, human dignity and social justice,” referring to the slogans that were raised during the January 25, 2011, revolution.

Meanwhile, he congratulated his sole competitor: “I send a special congratulation to Mr Hamdeen Sabahi, the presidential candidate who afforded a serious opportunity for electoral competition.”

“I am telling him, as well as I am telling all Egyptians: I am looking forward to the continuation of your efforts during the upcoming stage. It is the time to work in order to move our dear Egypt towards a better and brilliant future—to work to achieve stability for this country.”

Al-Sisi said that the presidential elections are part of the “future roadmap agreed upon by the national parties as a result of two revolutions: January 25 and June 30”.

He concluded: “I am looking forward to fulfil the demands of the precious trust that you have put on my shoulders.”
