Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad passed a new law yesterday imposing economic sanctions against army defectors, Syria’s state news agency SANA reported.
SANA said: “This bill will stop the deduction of funds from the paycheck of individuals in the military, both who are in active duty and retired personnel, who sponsored other military personnel who deserted or went AWOL.”
According to the law, public banks can take all legal procedures to collect their debts from army deserters including confiscating funds from the officials, and their spouses and children, or registering a financial obligation for them that are collected later
Finance Minister Ismail Ismail told SANA that the law permits the legal prosecution of deserters and their spouses and children for collecting the debts they owe.
He did not specify the number of people affected by the new law.
