Iraq must form a government of national unity soon to save it from sectarian war, the Turkish prime minister and president of the Kurdish Regional Government of Iraq said yesterday.

Well-informed sources said Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Barzani and the President of the Kurdistan, Nechirvan Barzani, discussed the latest developments in the region, especially in Mosul and Kirkuk, during their meeting in Ankara.

They agreed that a unity government was necessary to protect the unity of political and territorial integrity, and stressed the importance of the safe return of the Turkish hostages to their families.

The two premiers stressed the need to establish a government embracing all aspects of the Iraqi people, and aimed to achieve a fair sharing of wealth and power in the country.

Sources said that Erdogan and Barzani also discussed the issue of energy cooperation, and stressed their commitment to strengthening cooperation.

Erdogan said that, since June 12, Turkey has been sending humanitarian aid to all those in need, especially in the areas where this is a Turkmen majority, Anadolu news agency reported.

The agency said Barzani is today due to meet Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu at the Foreign Ministry in Ankara.
