Syrian opposition fighters, including those affiliated to al-Qaeda, have seized control of most of the Syrian side of Golan Heights in Quneitra province, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported Saturday.

The fighters have gradually succeeded in seizing swaths of Quneitra province, including the border crossing with the side occupied by Israel since 1967.

According to the director of the Syrian observatory, Ramy Abdel-Rahman, as quoted by AFP, the Nusra Front fighters and other Islamist militants are “about to liberate the entire Golan Heights.”

He pointed out that the opposition militants have now seized control of 80 percent of the Quneitra countryside.

He added that Quneitra may become the second province lost by the Syrian regime, after Al-Raqqa province now under the full control of ISIS.
