Iran has denied that it has set any preconditions on Hamas before a visit to Tehran of the movement’s top political leader, Khaled Meshaal, Felesteen newspaper reported on Wednesday.
The foreign ministry made the announcement when it confirmed news that discussions have taken place between Iran and Hamas. Mr Meshaal, it is said, will be visiting Iran at an “appropriate” time.
Ministry spokesperson Marzieh Afkham said that talk of preconditions are no more than media analysis and expectations. “They have nothing to do with the reality,” she insisted.
The relations between Iran and Hamas are strong, she added. “Indeed, there is continuous contact between Iran and all of the Palestinian factions, including Hamas.”
