King of Bahrain sends condolences to Iranian president

The King of Bahrain has sent condolences to Iran on the death of the mother of President Hassan Rouhani. Hamad Bin Isa Al-Khalifah, reported the official Bahrain news agency, expressed his “deep and truthful thoughts” for the death of the 90-year old, and prayed for her to “rest in peace”.

Sekineh Payvandi passed away on Friday after months of illness. She had been in hospital for several days.

Relations between Bahrain and Iran have been tense following Bahrain’s accusation that the government in Tehran is interfering in its internal affairs and supporting Shia opposition groups in the tiny Gulf country.
