Sporadic clashes are reported to have broken out between the Aknaf Bait Al-Maqdes brigades, the largest organised armed Palestinian militia inside the Yarmouk refugee camp in Syria, and Islamic State (ISIS) militants and their allied militias, including Al-Qaeda-affiliated Jabhat Al-Nusra.
The Action Group for Palestinians in Syria said in a statement on Sunday that “the Aknaf Bait Al-Maqdes brigades launched an attack against Salah Al-Din mosque, while violent clashes with Islamic State militants broke out in the region.”
The statement pointed out that clashes have also erupted in the Zein neighbourhood and Beirut Al-Janoubi Street between Syrian opposition groups, including Sham Al-Rasool Brigades, Jaysh Al-Ababil Brigades and Jaysh Al-Islam, against Islamic State militants and their allied militias.
According to the statement, the clashes resulted in the opposition groups’ control over Zein neighbourhood.
Islamic State snipers were reported to be stationed atop buildings and rooftops to repel opposition groups’ attacks.
The Action Group warned that the situation in the besieged camp has worsened with the distribution of food and medical aid and the Syrian regime’s continued bombardment against the camp.
