Israeli analyst: Support Sisi regime to preserve regional stability

An Israeli security analyst has warned that if the regime of Egyptian President Abdul Fattah El-Sisi were to fall, not only would Egypt pay the price but so would Israel and the entire region with the Islamic State (ISIS) expanding its activities in the area.

In his daily piece published in Israeli tabloid Israel Hayom (Israel Today), Ophir Yisraeli called on the United States and the international community to assist Egypt in its war against the Islamic State in order to prevent the situation in Sinai from spreading to other countries.

Yisraeli pointed out that American encouragement and support will push Israel to expand its intelligence assistance to the Egyptian army and to allow the entry of more Egyptian troops and additional weapons to Sinai, thus overcoming the limitations set in the peace agreement between the two countries. However Yisraeli stressed that this support must be done secretly so that El-Sisi and his regime do not appear as collaborators with “the Zionists and the Americans”.

Yisraeli said that US President Barack Obama faces one of the toughest challenges as the Islamic State transfers its “terrorist activities” to Egypt, where the militant group recently waged wide-scale operations against the Egyptian army in Sinai during killing dozens of Egyptian soldiers.

According to the analyst, a comprehensive and determined effort by the international community led by the United States would bring things back on track and curb the militant group’s expansion.

“This strategy will serve the Egyptian interest and help it restore calm and promote sovereignty in Sinai as well as the US overall interest in the region as well, to curb the Islamic State until its full elimination,” he added.
