After a meeting with the Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, top Hamas official Khalid Meshaal accepted an invitation to visit Moscow, a statement said yesterday.
In a statement, Hamas said a delegation led by Meshaal briefed Lavrov on the conditions in the Gaza Strip in the aftermath of last summer’s Israeli offensive that killed 2,260 and wounded around 11,000 others.
Meshaal also discussed “Zionist terrorism in the West Bank and its assaults on Muslim and Christian sites in Jerusalem,” the official said, three days after an arson attack by suspected Jewish militants killed a Palestinian toddler.
“The [Russian] foreign minister extended an invitation to the leadership of Hamas to visit Moscow, the movement accepted the invitation. The date will be determined later,” the official said.
Lavrov expressed Moscow’s willingness to play a part in reaching a permanent solution for the Palestinian problem.
“We would like to see all Palestinians have a permanent home,” Lavrov said, according to Russian news agency TASS.
“We hope that with assistance from Russia and the whole world, this dream will come true,” Mashaal replied.
