Turkish navy rescues 2,631 migrants in Aegean Sea

The Turkish naval force rescued 2,631 illegal migrants in four days after their boat capsized in Aegean Sea to the West of the country, Anadolu News Agency reported on Friday.

Referring to a statement issued by the governorate of Izmir, where there is a Turkish seaport and naval base, Anadolu said that 50 rescue operations were carried out between the 4th and 7th of August.

The operations were carried out under the name ‘Hope Operation in the Aegean Sea’ launched by the Turkish Naval Forces.

The statement mentioned details about places, missions and numbers of migrants rescued in the operation. It also said that two bodies of migrants were retrieved from the sea during the operation.

According to the statement, the Turkish navy has carried out 806 rescue operation in the Aegean Sea since the beginning of this year. It rescued 28,558 migrants in these operations and arrested 45 human traffickers facilitating illegal migration.
