Israel: Abbas deterring launch of new Intifada

Israeli security sources hailed the efforts of Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas in cracking down on Palestinians and preventing the start of a new Intifada, Quds Press reported yesterday.

Palestinian anger increased recently following growing aggression from Israeli settlers against them and their property.

Settlers’ attacks reached their peak when a Palestinian house was set on fire on 31 July killing a toddler and his father, the baby’s mother and four-year-old brother are fighting for their lives in hospital.

Israeli website Wallah reported: “PA President Mahmoud Abbas undermined the launching of a new Palestinian Intifada despite daily clashes between Palestinians and Israeli troops and settlers in the West Bank.”

The website said that the PA’s security cooperation with Israel was the main reason a new Intifada had not been launched following arson attack, adding that the media doesn’t cover all clashes between settlers and Palestinians in an attempt to deter an uprising.

“The Palestinians recognise what it happening and they complain and they are at the edge of despair,” the website added.
