Israeli forces launched artillery and aerial attacks on Syria apparently in response to four rockets being fired from Syrian territory into the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights and Israel’s Upper Galilee yesterday.
Israel’s Wallah news site said the army responded to the rocket fire, targeting areas where the rockets are thought to have been launched from.
“We attacked with tanks, artillery, and one target from the air … We attacked several kilometres into Syria, five or six sites with multiple targets within each site,” Ynetnews quoted the Israeli army saying in a statement.
“Our attacks are much more severe this time around, in order to send a message and underscore the severity of this incident.”
Israeli Army Radio said the army mobilised troops on the northern border and that army airplanes are flying over the area.
A source in the Israeli army told Israel’s Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper that the incident did not result in injuries.
The Upper Galilee municipality called on its residents to stay near shelters or bunkers.
This is the first time rockets have been fired from the Syrian territories towards the Galilee since 1973.
