Saudi Arabia opens candidate registration for municipal elections

The Saudi Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs announced on Sunday that it would be opening registration for candidates to run for municipal elections for a period of 17 days.

Official voter registration began on 22 August, taking into account the proximity of the pilgrimage season.

The elections will be the first opportunity for women to vote and run as candidates made possible by a 2011 order by the late King Abdullah, who granted women opportunities for political participation.

The candidacy registration include conditions that a candidate cannot be under the age of 25 and must have “good conduct”.

Municipal elections are scheduled to take place in December.
