Brotherhood in Yemen condemns attack on Red Cross staff

The general secretariat of the Yemen Gathering for Reformation, a group affiliated to the Muslim Brotherhood, has condemned an attack on Red Cross staff while they were carrying out their humanitarian mission. The International Committee of the Red Cross suspended its activities in Yemen after two of its staff were killed in Amran, to the north of the Yemeni capital Sana’a, Quds Press reported on Friday.

“This was a savage killing of two of our staff while they were in two vehicles under the flag of the ICRC,” said ICRC spokeswoman Rima Kamal.

The two were killed on Wednesday and a third was wounded when soldiers at a military checkpoint affiliated to opposition groups opened fire on them. The Red Cross officials were on their way to Khiwan neighbourhood to open a temporary clinic for the treatment of war casualties.

The deadly attack came after the ICRC headquarters in Aden was targeted and looted several days ago. A local source described this is a dangerous precedent for humanitarian organisations, which are helping the Yemenis living under very difficult conditions.
