The difference between Iran and the Gulf states are political and not religious, the Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani said yesterday.
“The existing disputes, in my opinion, are political, regional Arab-Iranian differences, rather than being a Sunni-Shia dispute,” Sheikh Tamim told the United Nations General Assembly.
“Iran is an important neighbour and it is in the region’s interest to cooperate with it and there is no disagreement related to bilateral relations between our two countries,” he added.
Al-Thani said Qatar is willing to host “meaningful dialogue” between the two sides to reach an agreement that governs relations between Iran and its neighbours based on the rules of non-interference in internal affairs.
He welcomed the nuclear agreement signed between Iran and the world powers saying: “It is a positive and important step, and we look forward to contributing to the maintenance of security and stability in our region, but we demand to move to nuclear disarmament in the whole region.”
