Israel’s Shin Bet, the internal security service, has detained a Palestinian activist in ‘Akka, denying him access to a lawyer.
Hassan Nadaf, a 20-year-old political activist, was seized at home on Monday by a mix of uniformed and plain clothes police officers. Reports state that the police informed the family that their visit was in response to something that Nadaf had posted on Facebook.
On Tuesday, the authorities requested an extension of Nadaf’s detention for another 15 days, based on an accusation of “possessing arms”. The court hearing of the appeal against preventing Nadaf from meeting a lawyer was scheduled for Wednesday afternoon in Hafia district court.
According to legal rights group Adalah, Israeli police have detained 14 Palestinians citizens since Monday during protests in solidarity with Palestinian demonstrations in East Jerusalem and the West Bank, including in Yafa and Nazareth. Three Palestinians were also arrested in clashes after Sakhnin’s game with Beitar Jerusalem Monday night.
