Israel to install CCTV along West Bank roads

The Israeli defence ministry plans to install sophisticated surveillance cameras along the roads of the West Bank to monitor people and vehicle movements, Israel’s Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper revealed.

The newspaper reported yesterday that the project will be implemented in two stages. In the first stage, dozens of cameras will be installed at junctions over the next three to six months while the second stage will see over 100 cameras added at various points.

According to the paper, the advanced control system will allow the provision of information after accidents and will allow occupation authorities to spot persons, vehicles and suspicious movements, allowing the army to respond quickly and thwart hostile operations before they occur.

The newspaper pointed out that the footage will be transmitted to the Israeli army’s intelligence units which collect information before, during and after clashes.

The project is likely to cost the ministry nearly $63 million.
