Lebanon’s Hezbollah rejected Lebanon’s membership in the Saudi-led Islamic alliance, describing the coalition as “suspicious”.
In a statement made available to the Anadolu Agency, Hezbollah expressed its absolute rejection of any Lebanese involvement in this “suspicious” coalition.
“Lebanon was a pioneer in facing terrorism in all its forms,” the statement added.
Hezbollah expressed “deep doubts about the background and objectives behind the Saudi announcement of this alliance.”
“We were surprised by Saudi Arabia’s announcement that Lebanon is part of a coalition without the Lebanese people’s knowledge.”
The group described the Saudi announcement as “a violation of the constitution and the law [of Lebanon],” and questioned whether Saudi Arabia is the right state to lead an anti-terrorism alliance, accusing it of supporting “terrorist, extremist and militant thought across the world”.
Hezbollah said that the coalition comes in line with the US interest in having sectarian forces fight militants in the region instead of sending American troops.
