January 6, 2016 at 12:05 pm

The Gulf Cooperation Council announced on Tuesday that an extraordinary meeting of its members will be held in Riyadh on Saturday to discuss the repercussions of the Saudi-Iran crisis.

According to a statement seen by Anadolu, the meeting will be chaired by Adel Bin Ahmed Al-Jubeir, Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Affairs Minister. He announced on Sunday that his country has decided to “cut off diplomatic relations with Iran” against the backdrop of the attacks on the embassy and consulate by Iranians protesting at Saudi Arabia’s execution of Shia Shaikh Nimr Baqir Al-Nimr last week.

“The agenda will include a discussion about the repercussions of the recent attack on Saudi Arabia’s embassy in Tehran and its consulate in the Iranian city of Mashhad,” explained GCC Secretary General Abdul Latif Bin Rashid Al Zayani.

On Monday, the Arab League announced that an extraordinary meeting at foreign minister level will be held at the league’s headquarters in Cairo the day after the GCC meeting. It has been called by Saudi Arabia to discuss the same issues that the GCC will cover.
