Daesh downs government warplane in Libya

February 13, 2016 at 3:13 pm

Daesh claimed on Friday that it shot down a Mig-23 fighter jet belonging to the Libyan government in Tobruk. A government official confirmed that an aircraft was hit while attacking targets of the Benghazi Revolutionary Shura Council, AlKhaleejonline.com has reported. An AFP report said that the jet was shot down in Qaryunes, north-west of Benghazi.

A Tobruk government army commander, Said Wanis, said that the anti-aircraft fire which hit the plane came from fighters belonging to Ansarul-Sharia and Daesh. “Qaryunes,” he added, “has been under siege for one and half a years.” The pilot survived the attack.

This is the third Mig23 to be lost over the past few weeks, although the aircraft which crashed last Monday did so because of “technical reasons”, insisted Libyan government officials.
