Russia continues intervention in Syria after partial withdrawal

April 13, 2016 at 2:52 pm

Russia continues fighting opposition groups alongside the Syrian regime’s army a month after Russian President Vladimir Putin partly withdrew his forces from Syria.

Nearly a dozen Russian fighter jets remain in Humaimim airbase, northwestern Syria, AFP news agency reported.

The agency’s correspondent visited the airbase and reported a significant decline in Russian activities at the base compared to December last year when bombardments reached their peak.

Russian Army Spokesman Igor Konashenkov said: “More than twenty fighter jets were withdrawn from the base including Su-34, Su-24 and Su 25, as well as helicopters, MI-8, and MI- 24, while less than half of our aircrafts remain at the base.”

In mid-March, Putin announced that the majority of Russian troops would return home following the start of a truce in Syria between the opposition and the regime proposed by Moscow and Washington.
