Red Cross: Aleppo on the brink of a disaster

The escalation of violence in the Syrian city of Aleppo has place residents on the brink of a humanitarian disaster, the International Committee of the Red Cross warned yesterday.

Fierce battles, which erupted in Aleppo between opposition fighters and the Assad regime, aggravated the suffering of tens of thousands of residents of Aleppo, which was described by the as one of the worst affected areas in Syria.

The statement came less than a day after a Russian raid targeted one of the opposition field hospitals in Aleppo resulting in dozens of deaths and the injury of others, including doctors, nurses and patients.

More than 80 civilians and relief workers were killed in the past week in the opposition-controlled areas as Assad’s forces intensified their raids, backed by Russia.
