Iran insists on secure environment for Syrian elections

The secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council has insisted on the need for a secure environment for elections in Syria. Ali Shamkhani reiterated Tehran’s belief on Friday that only the Syrians have the right to choose their leader and future, reported Quds Press.

Describing the Russian, Syrian and Iranian meeting in Tehran as proof that there is a “reinforced will” to fight the opposition, Shamkhani noted that the “continuous support for the legitimate government and the Syrian people is an effort to achieve security and stability [in Syria].” He hailed the “courageous measures” carried out by Russian President Vladimir Putin and his “effective role in the comprehensive fighting of terror in Syria.”

With “increasing political, security and military complexities” in the Syrian crisis, said Shamkhani, “the confrontational style and influence of the Americans and their Western and regional alliance in Syria proves that they only aim to afford secure borders for the Israeli entity.” He added that the actions of the US and its allies are only media and diplomatic showcasing aimed at public opinion for political and electoral purposes.

The senior Iranian official stressed that the “increasing” and “strong” cooperation between the Iranians, Syrians and Russians will be the main factor in the defeat of the terrorist network in the region.
