Official: Saudi Arabia puts new banking measures in place for Lebanese workers

Saudi Arabia has taken new measures concerning bank transfers made by Lebanese workers to their country, Lebanese Chamber of Commerce Chairman Mohammed Shuqair said.

Shuqair explained in a statement on Thursday that currently each bank transfer “takes around three to four days before reaching Beirut”, adding that this is the time the Saudi authorities spend detecting the identity of the sender and the party to whom the money is being sent to, in an “attempt to prevent these transfers from reaching terrorist organizations”.

Shuqair said the new Saudi step was not political, but described it as “a security and economic step that abides by the international banking law”.

Saudi Arabia added a number of organizations to its list of terrorist organisations in April, including the Lebanese group Hezbollah.
