Egypt dissatisfied with Italian senate decision to halt supply of warplane parts

The Egyptian ministry of foreign affairs on Thursday expressed dissatisfaction with the Italian senate decision to halt supplying Cairo with spare parts for F16 warplanes in protest at the murder of Italian student Giulio Regeni.

“This move is not consistent with the level of cooperation that has existed between investigative authorities in both countries since the beginning of the case,” the Egyptian foreign ministry said in a statement.

The ministry added: “Egypt will monitor developments in this regard to make the right decision with respect to the manner in which Egyptian-Italian relations are managed.”

The ministry assured that Egypt wishes to sustain relations at a level that achieves the interests of the two countries.

The Italian senate voted on Wednesday to cancel the free supply of the warplanes’ spare parts to Egypt by 159 votes to 55.
