UN: 657,433 Syrian refugees in Jordan

July 18, 2016 at 3:10 pm

Some 657,433 Syrian refugees have registered with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Jordan.

Of those in Jordan, 516,078 live in towns and cities across the country while the remainder live in refugee camps, the official spokesman for the UNHCR in Jordan Muhammed Al-Hawari said.

Females make up 50.7 per cent of the total number of Syrian refugees in the country, while 44.8 per cent of all refugees are aged between 18-59 years old.

According to Al-Hawari, more than a third of the refugees are from Daraa, with others from Homs and Tartous also arriving in the country.

Jordan is one of the countries that has been most affected by the Syrian crisis due to the length of its border with its northern neighbour. Some 1.39 million Syrians are thought to be living in Jordan; nearly half of them registered with the UNHCR as “official refugees”.

The UN spokesman said 90 per cent of Syrians in Jordan live under the poverty line. This can be clearly attributed to the lack of aid and the length of the crisis which has caused refugees to use all their savings.
