UN: Libya requested US air raids

The United Nations said that the air raids launched by the US on Libya yesterday came in response to the request of the President of Libya’s Government of National Accord (GNA) Fayez Al-Sarraj.

In a news conference at the UN headquarters in New York, Deputy Spokesman for the Secretary-General Farhan Haq explained that the UN is aware of reports about the occurrence of US airstrikes on Libya, adding that the they understand that the strikes came in response to Al-Sarraj’s request.

The US launched airstrikes against Daesh targets in Sirte.

In a televised speech aired on Libya’s state TV channel yesterday, Al-Sarraj said that the GNA decided to respond to a request from the Special Operations Room (Misrata-Sirte) asking for US support to carry out specific airstrikes against Daesh sites in Sirte.
