Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU)

A Swiss human rights activist of Tunisian origin, Anwar Al-Maghribi, has said that Egypt’s efforts to rejoin the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) face many obstacles, not least of which is Cairo’s continued detention of parliamentarians. Speaking to Quds Press, Maghribi said that the IPU will consider the Egyptian request to rejoin the bloc in October.

He explained that a delegation from the IPU visited Egypt recently. The detention of parliamentarians since the coup against elected President Mohammed Morsi is the main obstacle to Egypt’s IPU membership, the activist stressed.
