OIC renews hope of political solution in Syria

August 15, 2016 at 12:04 pm

The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) renewed its hope on Sunday of a political solution in Syria, stressing that it is concerned about the “deteriorating” and “tragic” humanitarian situation in the country, Anadolu has reported.

“We would like to renew the persistent stance of the organisation,” wrote Secretary General Iyad Al-Madani to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, “which is calling for efforts to be made in order to reach an urgent and appropriate solution for the Syrian crisis, aiming to end the suffering of its people based on the first Geneva deal and UN Security Council resolutions.”

Al-Madani stressed that the OIC is following the “critical” situation in Syria “very gravely” as well as the “tragic and complicated humanitarian developments” which have grave repercussions for the Syrian people.

On 6 August, the Syrian opposition announced that it had broken the five year-old siege of Aleppo, which was imposed on the city by the Syrian regime, supported by Russia. In response, government forces backed by Russian air strikes intensified the attacks on Aleppo and other cities in the north of the country.
