The salaries of 19,330 employees in the Gaza Strip are to be distributed today and over the coming days as part of a Qatari grant.
Gaza’s Undersecretary of the Ministry of Finance Yusuf Al-Kayali said the disbursement mechanism consists of a system of categories based on the employees’ salaries.
Original salary (Shekels) | Grant disbursement ($) |
Less than 1,500 | 700 |
1,500-2,000 | 1,200 |
2,000-3,000 | 1,600 |
3,000-4,000 | 2,000 |
4,000-5,000 | 2,400 |
More than 5,000 | 2,700 |
He stressed that 2,800 employees have been denied access to the grant by the United Nations after the organisation completed checks on them.
Al-Kayali said: “The lists arrived yesterday after the United Nations completed a security check, and we were shocked to see that 2,800 have been blocked; this is a large number compared to the number of employees blocked in 2014.”
“This is a witch hunt of our employees,” he added, saying it was an arbitrary decision. Fifty per cent of those denied access to the funds are from the ministries of health and education.
He stressed that the Ministry of Finance will pay the salaries of those who did not receive funds from the Qatari grant beginning next week.
