Some 9,949 civilians have been detained by the Houthi militias and forces loyal to former Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh since the Houthi coup in September 2014, until April this year, according to a local human rights organisation.

Where do Houthis and Saleh detain and imprison civilians?

  • 227 government facilities which they have captured
  • 27 hospitals and health facilities
  • 49 public and private universities
  • 99 public and private schools
  • 25 playgrounds and sports clubs
  • 47 judicial facilities
  • 10 secret prisons

The Yemeni Coalition to Monitor Human Rights Violations (YCMHRV) released a report yesterday stating that it has documented 9,949 cases of arbitrary detention, included that of 12 women and 204 children. Additionally, 2,806 of those captured have disappeared, 4,689 were tortured, and eight died in ambiguous circumstances.

The report stated that those abducted were held in 480 prisons and detention centres run by Houthi and Saleh militias.

Yemen has been locked in a bitter battle between Shia Houthi fighters allied with forces loyal to ousted President Ali Abdullah Saleh and government forces led by President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi, along with local tribes and resistance forces backed by the Saudi-led coalition’s airstrikes.
