Saudi prince executed after murder conviction

A Saudi prince was executed yesterday after he was found guilty of killing a Saudi man during a dispute, Gulf News reported.

The murder took place over three years ago in Riyadh’s Thumama neighbourhood.

The interior ministry defended the decree to sentence the prince to death.

“Turki Bin Saud Bin Turki Bin Saud Al Kabir, a Saudi national, had shot Adel Bin Sulaiman Bin Abdul Kareem Al Muhaimeed, also a Saudi national, following a group dispute,” the ministry said in a statement.

“The criminal was arrested and he was charged with committing a crime, He was referred to the court which issued a death verdict. The case was taken to the Court of Appeals and then to the High Court [the Court of Cassation] and the initial death sentence was upheld. A royal order was issued to carry out the execution.”

The execution came as Saudi Arabia is beginning to implement widespread social and economic reforms as it struggles under a prolonged oil-price slump and deficits.
