Israel ‘uses economic blackmail against ailing Egyptian government’

Israel is using economic blackmail against the ailing Egyptian government by turning the harsh financial crisis in the country to suit its own agenda, AlMesryoon.com reported on Friday. Citing a research study published by the Egyptian Institute for Political and Strategic Studies, the website noted that Palestinian researcher Mohamed Abu-Sa’da has pointed out that this is merely Israel placing conditions on Cairo in case it wants economic assistance.

“The Israeli government wants its Egyptian counterpart to improve Israel’s image in society,” explained Abu-Sa’da. He stressed that the Israeli leaders know full well that the Egyptian regime is “on the verge of collapse.”

The Palestinian researcher reiterated that Egypt needs “massive economic support”, much more than a single state, even with a strong economy, can afford to offer. He believes that the Israeli offer of assistance will serve the interests of Israel more than those of Egypt.

He added that the potential Israeli support is intended solely to extend the life of the current Egyptian government. Israel, he said, would never pay serious attention to Egypt’s internal economic, social and political situation. The result, he concluded, will be to take Egypt to a position from where any new government would never be able to carry out effective reform.
