The Egyptian Ministry of Finance yesterday announced that it would implement a ban on the entry of any goods that do not conform to European standards across the country’s main ports and markets.

The minister’s assistant, Mona Nasser, said the ministry was preparing a “list of specifications to which imported goods would be subject to before entry,” noting that the new requirements would go into effect by the end of March.

“The new system will require more details about the importer and exporter’s operations and work details,” she added.

Nasser urged exporters and importers “to double check and review their documents before the goods’ arrival at the ports,” warning that violators would face “strict measures.”

“The customs authority imposes control over specifications in an integrated manner, especially since the most products violating the standards were in the food and drink sector,” the official pointed out, stressing that the move was aimed at “raising the quality of products available in the Egyptian market.”
