An Israeli military court extended the detention of a member of the Fatah Revolutionary Council and former lawmaker, Jamal Haweel, for seven days to allow more time for an investigation to be carried out for his alleged “incitement” against Israel.

The Prisoners’ Club said in a statement that 54-year-old Haweel’s arrest “comes within the systematic targeting of every Palestinian actor. Since the beginning of the war of extermination [on 7 October], the Israeli occupation has used two central tools, namely the crime of administrative detention, as well as arrest against the backdrop of so-called incitement” to detain Palestinians.

“The vast majority of those arrested were either transferred to administrative detention, including women and children, or charged with [incitement], which is another aspect of administrative detention.”

It pointed out that “arrests on the grounds of [incitement] are escalating to a large extent, knowing that the concept of incitement claimed by the [Israeli] occupation is vague, which has contributed to expanding the circle of targeting Palestinians, to include all groups.”

The Israeli occupation forces arrested Haweel on 7 June, after besieging the pharmacy where he was staying with friends in Jenin, in the northern occupied West Bank.

Haweel is a former prisoner who spent a total of 11 years in Israeli prisons, including seven and a half years continuously. He co-lead the battle of Jenin refugee camp in 2002 during the Israeli occupation army’s invasion of the camp.

His brother, Najib Haweel, was killed by Israel in 1991.
