Egypt is working on increasing its gas imports in order to reduce its dependence on Israeli gas. According to the economic supplement The Marker issued by Israel’s Haaretz newspaper, Egypt is preparing for the continuation of the military campaign in Gaza and is increasing its import of liquified natural gas from other sources.

“Egypt’s electricity ministry announced the prolonging of the power cuts in the country, provoking criticism against the government,” it added. “This also explains the country’s increased gas imports.”

Cairo announced a large bid recently to buy 20 liquefied gas tanks, while the national gas company announced the establishment of a consortium to import gas from the US.

Israeli media announced last week that Tel Aviv had responded to Egypt’s persistent appeals to increase the pumping of Israeli gas in the face of the electricity crisis the country is currently suffering from, and the occupation state has already agreed to pump more natural gas supplies until next year.

The Nviz website said that Egypt is pressuring Israel, given the rising temperatures, to increase the amount of gas supplies, noting that Israel itself barely possesses the amount of gas necessary to operate turbines at the peak of their production due to the extreme heat in the country. This has led to record electricity consumption by Israelis.
