Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed yesterday his intention to keep Israeli troops in the Philadelphi Corridor on the border between the Gaza Strip and Egypt. The Israeli prime minister told Israel’s Channel 14 that the decision on this will be made by a vote among his cabinet members.
Netanyahu’s statement contradicts the position of Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, who is opposed to remaining in the narrow strip of land.
The Israeli leader believes that remaining in the corridor “has political and security advantages.” He did not explain what these advantages are, but keeping the army there means continuing the ground siege on the Gaza Strip, isolating it completely from the world.
“Everyone is allowed to express their opinion, just as the prime minister is also allowed to express his opinion, and ultimately, we will make the decision based on the opinion of the majority in the cabinet,” explained Netanyahu. “I am sure that the majority supports my position because it is the right one.”
