Egypt yesterday welcomed UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee’s decision to keep the Old City of Jerusalem and its walls, the Old City of Hebron, and the Palestine Land of Olives and Grapes site – the cultural landscape of agricultural terraces south of Jerusalem – on the List of World Heritage in Danger.
The decision was made on Tuesday during the World Heritage Committee’s 46th session in India’s New Delhi.
In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates Affairs reiterated its rejection of Israeli violations in the occupied West Bank and emphasised that these violations, particularly in the Old City of Jerusalem aim at altering the city’s current status.
The ministry called on the Israeli government to halt all its illegal actions intended to change the status of East Jerusalem and to respect the existing status of the Islamic and Christian holy sites and adhere to relevant international resolutions.
The List of World Heritage in Danger aims to inform the world about conditions that threaten the characteristics of these sites and encourage corrective action.
