The Muslim Brotherhood in Jordan has welcomed the appointment of Yahya Sinwar as the new head of Hamas’s political bureau, succeeding Ismail Haniyeh who was assassinated in Tehran on 31 July, Quds Press reported.
The group also affirmed “the Palestinian people’s right to defend their land and homeland from the Zionist [Israeli] occupation.”
The Muslim Brotherhood in Jordan said it considered Sinwar’s selection “an affirmation of Hamas strength and adherence to the resistance project as an authentic option to liberate all of Palestine from the sea to the river, despite the targeting of its leaders.”
The statement indicated that the mechanism for selecting Sinwar “affirms the constants that the movement has always enjoyed including free choice of its leadership, which sends a strong message to the Zionist enemy that Hamas is still strong and cohesive at all levels, especially since this selection comes in light of the continuation of the Flood of Al-Aqsa battle.”
On Tuesday, Hamas announced that Sinwar had been appointed head of the movement’s political bureau, succeeding Haniyeh.
Born 7 October 1962, Sinwar has been arrested multiple times by Israel and sentenced to four life terms before being released in a prisoner exchange deal in 2011.
Israel accuses him of being the mastermind behind the 7 October attack.
