The Government Media Office (GMO) in Gaza has announced the martyrdom of journalist Hamza Abdul Rahman Murtaja, which brings the number of journalists who have been killed in Gaza to 170 since the beginning of Israel’s genocide against the Palestinians in the enclave. Murtaja was killed alongside at least ten people after an Israeli air strike targeted the Mustafa Hafez School in Gaza City, where displaced people were seeking shelter.
Murtaja was a photographer and journalist working for several media outlets, and is the brother of fellow journalist Yasser Murtaja, who was killed by an Israeli sniper on 6 April 2018, while covering the Great March of Return to the east of Khan Yunis in the southern Gaza Strip.
In a press statement on Tuesday, the GMO condemned in the strongest terms occupation state’s deliberate targeting and killing of Palestinian journalists. It called on the international community and journalists’ unions to campaign vigorously to end the Israeli aggression, take Israeli officials to the international courts and stop the murder of journalists by Israeli troops.
