Saudi Arabia’s futuristic mega-city, NEOM, is set to revolutionise maritime transport with the introduction of eight Candela P-12 electric hydrofoil boats. According to reports, these cutting-edge vessels from Sweden will provide a sustainable, zero-emission water network within NEOM, aligning with the Kingdom’s vision for environmentally friendly urban mobility.

The Candela P-12, which glides above the water using computer-guided hydrofoils, consumes 80 per cent less energy than conventional vessels. With a top speed of 25 knots and over two hours of battery life, it is the fastest and longest-range electric passenger boat to date.

Designed for efficiency and comfort, the P-12 emits 97.5 per cent less CO2 over its lifetime compared with traditional diesel vessels.

“The P-12 is designed to create zero-emission water transport systems which have significant improvements over traditional water commuting,” said Gustav Hasselskog, CEO and founder of Candela. “We’re extremely proud to provide a vessel system designed with both passengers and the environment in mind. Short waiting times, quick connections and a very enjoyable experience without taxing the environment with wakes, emissions and noise will revolutionise how we travel on water.”

Having just launched last year, the first batch of eight vessels is scheduled for delivery in 2025 and early 2026. They are set to make their debut as part of Stockholm’s public transport in the autumn.
