Israeli and Hamas delegations left the Egyptian capital, Cairo, on Sunday afternoon, following a meeting with Egyptian and Qatari mediators in the latest round of talks aimed at concluding a ceasefire in the ongoing war in Gaza, media sources reported.

In the absence of a final agreement the mediators, it was reported, proposed a partial agreement at the present time, with the completion of the remaining stages at a later date.

Reuters news agency quoted two Egyptian security sources as saying that the talks had ended without an agreement with neither Hamas nor Israel agreeing to compromises proposed by mediators.

Key sticking points in the talks include an Israeli presence in the Philadelphi Corridor, a narrow 14.5km-long (9-mile-long) stretch of land along Gaza’s southern border with Egypt or to pledge a final ceasefire. Hamas categorically refuses to accept both issues.

The Israeli delegation has reportedly proposed to redeploy its forces inside the Strip, while maintaining a permanent presence in 12 deployment points, most of them in the north of the Strip, in addition to the Netzarim axis.

With the failure of the latest talks, it was reported that mediators have begun working for a humanitarian truce ranging from four days to a week to meet humanitarian needs and deliver polio vaccines and hygiene materials. Gaza is now threatened with the spread of many diseases among the displaced and fears of an epidemic outbreak.
